Shadow Song
Lyrics and Music: Eli August and Waylon K. Smith
Thirty years in the midday sun
This ain’t the future that I’d planned on
Bloodstains & calloused palms, Sunday best & simple psalms
But is there more that I have left in me?
CH:
& the only sin is letting the cold seep in
The moon gives no warmth, only shadow
A million miles to hang my boots on
Now i walk them all ‘till the soles are gone
& I done everything, but is it enough
To keep on standing while the shadows grow long
CH:
BR:
The echo of chapel bells
Sunlight floods as the music swells
CH:
& the only sin is letting the cold seep in
The moon gives no warmth, only shadow
& the only sin, choosing not to begin
As morning breaks across the meadow

April 14th
Lyrics and Music: Eli August
Ain't got nowhere to go, no reason to sow
We've lived life so desperate where nothing will grow
April 14th, a black mountainous beast
What we didn't swallow got caught in our teeth
Afterall, never felt so small
To think there's a God here who has damned us all
The mortgage is due, the cattle are through
And I can't make amends with you
There's got to be some way out of this x3
A rope, or a bullet will do
I won't miss the pain, but I'll miss you

Severns
05:27
|
|||
My names William Severn
I live with my wife and child
My younger brother, Lawrence, came to stay with us a while
The weeks turned into months
He helped us with the land
The rain just wouldn't come
But the wind had hellish plans
We've made it through some tough times
Back then I could persist
It tests the soul, but I don't know
It's never been like this
It's so damn dry, we can't grow a thing
And the dust in my lungs, come Sunday I can hardly sing
CH1:
I need a little church, need a little faith
Need a little green, since lately all we've seein is grey
Need a little light in our life
Sending prayers upwards in the night
My names Lawrence Severn
I came down from Ypsilanti
Where I had lived a good life
Proud to say that I had plenty
But my brother needed aid
Damned if these crops won't grow
'Cause these Oklahoma fields are blowing dust as thick as snow
I know he feels broken
But if the Lord just won't provide
You can't just keep on praying, hoping
Somehow we'll survive
CH2:
We need a little spark, but that could start a fire
Sometimes you gotta burn it all to really feel inspired
Gonna send a signal into the night
We need a little light in our life
BR:
What if the insurance suspects that there's foul play?
Then come back east, at the very least
We can change our names
Don't worry, brother, it'll be ok
CH1:
CH2:
We need a little plan, give me a little faith
If the Lord don't answer, someone else has gotta pay
There's gonna be a phoenix from these flames
Cash the check, stop praying for the rain
CH1:
We need a little church, need a little faith
Need a little green, since lately all we've seein is grey
Need a little light in our life
Sending prayers, and ashes to the night

Lifeblood
Lyrics and Music: Eli August and Waylon K. Smith
Put your belly to the bar, tell me all about the farm
Lay bare your soul
How you made it this far and aren't you alarmed
There's no way to be made whole
Friend, I've got an ear, and I've got a remedy
Bourbon or beer, what will it be?
The skies went dry, as the state turned wet
I got rows and rows planted, but ain't nothing growed yet
The cruel irony ain't lost on me
Distilled in them bottles is corn and wheat,
Our lifeblood turned poison for the pain
The topsoil's gone and we still ain't seen no rain
CH:
Corn and wheat were the backbone of this town
Now they're poison, and nothin's growing in the ground
But it ain't poison if it takes away the pain
I'll fill your glass, you take a drink and pray for rain
This be the altar, where I do my praying now
Spend every dollar planning my escape somehow
To California
Is your family buying in?
No, they ignore ya
No one else is listening
Everyone is giving in
Rumor is that the Severns burned their barn down
And there were 3 murders when the carnival rolled into town
The whole county has gone to hell
They found them bodies at the bottom of a dried up well
What's left to drink?
Just whiskey and despair

Well
Lyrics and Music: Waylon K. Smith
Well, well oh well
Dig a well, and we'll either find water or Hell
Everyone's got a story to tell
Everyone's got something to sell
Sell, buy or sell
The crash back east was a crack in the market bell
The wind whipped while Babylon fell
And carried the nation to Hell
Hell, Heaven or Hell
We are caught in the spell of a crumbling carousel
The storm clouds refuse to swell
I am thirsty, so I'll dig a well

Hymnal
Lyrics and Music: Waylon K. Smith
Shadow Song Refrain
Lyrics and Music: Eli August & Waylon K. Smith
Let us rise & turn to our hymnals
The melody is sweet, & the message is simple
But “peace, like a river” is a hard phrase to cling to
When sorrows, like black blizzards roll
The famine is crippling, my dear congregation
But we are creatures of fierce adaptation
& we will survive for the sake of our families
We are not alone
CH:
We thirst as one
Between the earth & sun
& though our throats are dry
This refrain will flood the sky
Let us rise & weave our voices
As clouds gather, surrounding our chorus
Rainfall pelts our modest steeple
Like whispers in the shivering cold
Take these words, & dwell on their meaning
Live for your loved ones & keep on repeating
A song on your lips to keep you from drowning
It is well with my soul
CH: x3
We thirst as one
Between the earth & sun
& though our throats are dry
This refrain will flood the sky
SHADOW SONG REFRAIN: x2
& the only sin is letting the cold seep in
The moon gives no warmth, only shadow
& the only sin is choosing not to begin
As morning breaks across the meadow
